The name of the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort could turn out to have been prophetic because Kobayashi Group LLC wants to bring the hotel, closed since September 2007, back to life.

Kauai lawmakers OK beachfront deal

The Kauai County Council has unanimously approved a plan that would transfer 138 acres of beachfront land to the county at no cost to taxpayers.

In exchange for the land, the Kauai Lagoons Resort would be granted four land use amendments to expand its development project.

Fewer cruise ships mean less business for Big Island tourism

Big Island tourism is taking a big hit from the cruise industry for 2009. Hilo Harbor has 100 calls scheduled for 2009 compared to 128 last year. That’s 49,076 fewer potential visitors.

A&B's Maui projects will resume

Construction at Alexander & Baldwin’s redeveloped mixed-use Kahului Town Center on Maui could start by the end of the year after a year-long delay.

The start of another A&B Properties project, the mixed-use Aina O Kane, also was delayed because of the length of time it has taken to secure building permits, said Vice President Grant Chun.

Home sales on the Big Island fell in December, mirroring the trend of a drop in sales of about 30 percent for all of 2008.

Prices of single-family homes fell during December, but held to modest decreases for the year, according to statistics from Hawaii Information Service.

According to the artcile, the median price for a single-family home on the Big Island in December was $297,500, a 22 percent drop from the same month in 2007, when it was $380,000. The median price for a single-family home for the year was $345,000 — 13 percent below the median price for 2007, which was $395,000.

Home sales on Kauai were down by more than 30 percent in December, and also were down by more than 30 percent for the whole year, according to new statistics.

Prices of single-family homes fell last month, while condominium prices were up, according to statistics from Hawaii Information Service. Prices were down by single digits for both categories for the year.

Hotel occupancy on Maui dropped 12.5 percentage points to 70.6 percent for the week ending June 28 -- the lowest occupancy rate in Hawaii. Maui room rates, meantime, climbed 4 percent to $316 a night -- the highest room rate statewide.

Homes sales on the Big Island continued to decline in May, with sales of single-family homes and condominiums down more than 30 percent from last year. Prices were mixed, however, with the median price of a single-family home down 11.5 percent to $389,000, from $439,500 in May 2007, according to statistics from the Hawaii Information Service. The year-to-date median price was $379,105, down 12 percent from the first five months of 2007, when it was $430,000.

Prices of single-family homes on Kauai rose in May, while prices of condominiums slipped. The median price of a single-family home on Kauai last month was $677,500, which was 19 percent over May 2007 when it was $570,000. The year-to-date median price was $655,000, no change from 2007. The median price of a condo was $627,000, down more than 10 percent from the May 2007 median price of $700,000. The median price for the first five months of the year was $579,500, more than 10 percent above the same period in 2007, when it was $525,000.
